Dear Friends,
As we see the seismic shifts in how the policies of our nation treat asylum seekers and refugees, and how we disrespect travelers from certain lands, we are not to substitute cruelty for compassion. As faith leaders of Austin and leaders of Interfaith Action of Central Texas (IACT), we stand united alongside those vulnerable and those possessed by the dreams of what America represents and what it offers. We do so recognizing that our country has achieved eminence through generosity and tolerance: that we have endeavored to serve as a beacon of welcoming freedom to people suffering under oppressive regimes throughout our history. We also assert that this shared history is one from which we must constantly learn and adapt, if we are to continue to claim as a nation the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all peoples in an ever-changing world.
In place of fear, we counsel confidence. History teaches that intolerance leads to persecution and violence. We will be judged by that same history for the rectitude of our intentions. We shall not shut our borders in lieu of reasonable debate, thinking that we are solving problems. This short-sighted solution cannot stand. Further, we know that children are our most precious resource, and they constantly learn from the examples that we offer. Let us offer them comfort, not trauma.
With full hearts, we consider America a home for all, yearning to breathe free. Our national moral and religious standard begins with standing with the stranger and the widow – aiding the defenseless and the unprotected. The United States shall serve the ennobling ideas of the architects of our democracy — a moral standard by which our country can thrive and be bettered still by those who seek to live their lives here.
Again, as our American traditions teach us, we will be judged for the rectitude of our intentions. We call upon each of us in community to embody our civic duty to speak, act, and stand for the enduring values of our republic. Let us engage our elected leaders, capitalize on the checks and balances that our Constitution provides, and take actions that are worthy of our democracy.
With deep gratitude,
Interfaith Action of Central Texas (iACT)
