By Ayesha Hassan, Grassroots Organizer

This week an ABC NEWS article reported that the Administration is working on a draft executive order that will allow resettlement of “refugees only where both the relevant state and local governments have consented to participate.” This action will essentially push the US back in time to an era where local and state governments could ban people from living in certain areas based on race, ethnicity, and/or national origin. We MUST ask our state and local leaders to stand against this proposed discriminatory executive order.

Action For State and Local Elected Leaders:
Last year, 270 local and state elected officials from 42 states expressed their support for resettling refugees in their communities. State and local leaders can find more information here: http://welcomingrefugees2020.org/

Action For US Legislators:

  • We need to also take action to call our US Senators and Representatives to ask that they support the GRACE Act (S.1088, H.R.2146), and NO BAN Act(S.1123, H.R.2214).
  • Ask Senators to VOTE NO on Senator Lindsey Graham’s “Secure and Protect Act” of 2019 (S. 1494).
Action For Maria Domingo Garcia To Be Released:
  • On August 7th, Maria, a mother of 4-month-old Jacqueline, was arrested in a massive immigration raid at poultry plants in Mississippi, along with nearly 700 other immigrants.
  • Tell the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi to Drop the Charges Against Maria Domingo Garcia and Reunite Maria With Her Breastfeeding Infant and Her Other Children
