At iACT, we have great appreciation for the wonderful volunteers who make our service work possible! In this Volunteer Spotlight Nancy Stewart tells us a little more about herself.

iACT volunteer Nancy Stewart.

Q: Where are you from? How long have you been in Austin?

A: I was born and raised in Van Nuys, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles. I’ve lived in Austin for about 30 years.

How long have you volunteered with iACT?

This was my 3rd summer volunteering with the iLearn program. I’ve also helped with one of the iACT home repair days and attended several Red Bench evenings.

What made you want to volunteer with iACT?

The anti-immigrant rhetoric pushed me find a way to do what I could to make a difference.  I’d attended a few of the interfaith Thanksgiving services as well as Red Bench evenings. Volunteering was the next logical step.  Working with children through the summer program is a way I can ease the transition of refugee children into our educational system.

What do you enjoy the most about working with iACT?

Volunteering with the iLearn program each summer. The kids are amazing and so are the staff and other volunteers. As a volunteer I get to see people going out of their way to make a difference in the lives of others.

What’s the most rewarding thing about working with iACT that you experienced?

Meeting and interacting with the children, the amazing staff and awesome volunteers! Also, learning about the different cultures.

Why would you encourage others to perform similar volunteer work with iACT?

“No one can do everything, but everyone can do something!” We can all do something to make Austin and the world a better, more inclusive place to live.

Thanks so much for sharing your story with us, Nancy! If you’re an iACT volunteer who wants to share your story, or if you’re interested in finding volunteer opportunities with iACT, contact Maggie Wagner at mwagner@interfaithtexas.org
