“And during supper 3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, … poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him… 34I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.”
-NRSV
The Gospel of John, Chapter 13 is the story of Jesus sharing a final meal with a group of his followers as he reflected on his mortality and mission. It was a risky time for Jesus and his followers. Death seemed near. As spiritual leaders are apt to do, Jesus wanted to share some meaningful final words with his disciples. He started by assuming the role of a servant and washed the feet of his disciples (a common act of hospitality in ancient Palestine) and told them to follow his example of service and to love one another. This act of service and the mandate to love others included those who would deny him and betray him. It is a portrait of humanity at its best and highest – serving, loving, and showing mercy – even when there is much to fear.
We are inspired by these qualities during times of crisis. We see people living out these values all around us in ways small and large: people delivering meals, wiping surfaces, caring for the sick, leading organizations, governing, informing, sharing resources, stocking shelves, teaching, caring for children, making music, responding to emergencies, and continuing to serve others even at great personal risk. Servant leaders carry humanity toward its destiny and hope. I am grateful for the many servant leaders in our community and in the world during these days and weeks. They lift me up. Thank you.

We want to hear from you!
