iACT for Refugees

iACT’s Refugee Program serves legally resettled refugees, asylees, humanitarian parolees, special immigrant visa holders (SIVs) and victims of human trafficking. We offer English Language Instruction (ELI) classes for adults, a Youth Mentorship (YM) program for refugees aged 15-24, a summer program (iLearn) and a tutoring program for refugee children, and a health and wellness program (H&W). All of our programs are free for eligible clients.

Eligibility
• Must be a documented Refugee, Asylee, Special Immigrant Visa holder, Humanitarian Refugee, or Victim of Trafficking.
• Must be in the US legally less than 5 years.
• Must be 16 or older and not in public school.

English Language Instruction (ELI)
Learning English is essential for a refugee’s success, without language people are left adrift and uncertain; they cannot advance in their jobs or seek support for themselves or their children. We pride ourselves on creating a welcoming space where people are accepted and encouraged wherever they are in their learning process.
• Classes are ongoing and year-round
• All levels of classes are available from low literacy to advanced.
• Classes can be via Zoom or in person at different times and days.
• Our teachers are experienced, compassionate, and passionate about teaching.

Refugee Youth Program

The Youth Mentorship Program (YM) serves refugees aged 15 to 24 in navigating education, career paths and cultural issues by pairing them with adult mentors.
• Program is ongoing and year-round
• Mentorship training is ongoing
• A mentor’s commitment is for 10 meetings with mentee at his or her home
• A curriculum on needed topics is available

iLearn Youth Summer Program is a six-week summer program which starts in June each year.
• For children 6-21 (must be enrolled in school)
• Focus on English language, basic math and school skills.
• For children of parents in our ELI program and school-aged mentees in our mentorship program and their siblings.
• Two certified teachers lead the program
• Volunteers from the community aged 15 or above are needed
• A weekly outing is organized in summer
• Tutoring during the school year is offered to interested groups this could be via Zoom or in person.

Health and Wellness Program (H&W)

Health Education Program (HEP) teaches online classes about healthcare.
• Topics include disease prevention, healthy habits, children’s health, nutrition and exercise.
• These are taught via Zoom in the languages of the students signed up.
Wellness Program (WP) invites refugee groups to monthly in person meetings.
• Clients can discuss health issues
• Expert speakers share information
• Common hurdles to wellness are addressed
• Conversation on topics like domestic violence, child protection services, cancer screenings and other important topics.
