By Chad Pevateaux, iACT for Refugees Program Director
Hanif Dadgar is an iACT success story. Persecuted in Afghanistan as part of the Hazara ethnic group, he came to Austin in January of 2022 and got connected to iACT’s refugee program.
His parents were illiterate, and he was the first in his family to finish high school and pass the college-entrance exam. With the unwavering support of his parents, he was able to get an economics degree from Kabul University, the best school in Afghanistan. Despite his excellent education, he arrived in Texas unable to speak English.
“I had lots of problems in the beginning here,” Hanif said. “I was not able to speak English. I was not allowed to work and I was not able to get an apartment.”
He started taking iACT’s English classes for refugees. “With the help of iACT and working hard on my English,” he said, “I finally I was able to get a job as cooker in a food truck and the same time working in a shop as a salesperson. I worked 13 hours a day and almost 6 days a week for two years. Then, I started looking for a better job.”
iACT was able to hire Hanif as a part-time translator, allowing him to help other refugees as well as providing him with further valuable work experience to help his career. He continued his English learning by advancing to classes from Austin Community College.
Last month, his hard work finally paid off when he was able to attain that sought-after better job. Hanif now works full-time as a legal assistant for Catholic Charities of Central Texas.
“I want to thank you from IACT,” Hanif said, “for supporting me and preparing the situation for me to improve my English language and other skills.” He also singled out iACT’s long-serving English teacher Tracey Woodson for special thanks and praise.
Way to go Hanif! Congratulations on your great job, and the entire iACT community wishes you continued success!
