The Daily Dose of Hope

“Hope doesn’t mean an anticipation or expectation of a deliverance from an intolerable or oppressive situation or condition…  True hope is trusting that what we have, where we are, and who we are is more than enough for us as creatures of God.  That’s the meaning of hope—to trust in the ultimate goodness of creation.“
-Thomas Merton

The only thing that can possibly defeat us is giving up hope.  Hope flees when our mindset places the power for solutions totally in our human ability.  We lose hope when we think that our help can only come from some other person and nobody comes.  Or we lose hope when we think everything depends on us alone and get overwhelmed.  Yet when we marshal the spiritual power that is within us, we energize hope and discover we have the strength to meet any challenge.  The Divine presence is always with us.  It lives in everyone and in all creation.  Without a realization of that, life is like trying to drive down the road in a car with no engine.  We don’t get very far.  But just the tiniest receptivity to the spiritual wisdom, love, guidance, and creative power available to us gets us moving!  When we trust that we are not alone, we see that the ultimate goodness of creation is real.  This gives us the courage to hope.  With hope we will never give up—even when things look impossible.  We find that we are indeed enough.

Rev. Anna Shouse, Ph.D., Unity of Austin

We want to hear from you!
How can you be like the rain lily, making beauty after the storm of this pandemic season? When was the last time nature inspired you? Let us know your thoughts by responding here.

Here are a few things people have shared:

How can you be like the rain lily, making beauty after the storm of this pandemic season?
“As a gluten free baker, I am baking for as many people as I can to bring them some small pleasures.” -Naomi

When was the last time nature inspired you?

“Here’s a poem inspired by nature:

Imagine life without tender hugs
Life without human touch
Vanished
An unknown existence
We will need new ways to grieve

Imagine April without Spring flings
Gatherings only on Zoom
Craving connection
Smiles from afar
We will need new ways to grieve

Imagine our friends and family
Alone
No Passover Seders, no Easter Mass
Community on screen
We will need new ways to grieve

Imagine a serene garden
Where life continues to bloom
And surrender
To daily joys, prayer and hope
We will need new ways to grieve

We WILL grieve our loss
We WILL find our strength
And once again
We WILL hug, and hold and touch
And be together”

-Rachel
