At iACT, we have great appreciation for the wonderful volunteers who make our service work possible! In this Volunteer Spotlight Cheryl Thompson, who volunteers for Hands on Housing, tells us a little more about herself.
1. Where are you from/Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. My husband Steve and I moved to Austin in 2014 to be close to our son, daughter-in-law, and our twin grandsons.
2. How did you first hear about Hands on Housing/iACT?
My son Joey introduced us to iACT. He participated in one of the Hands on Housing events through his church, and he thought Steve and I would be interested in volunteering.
3. What kind of volunteer work do you do for Hands on Housing/iACT?
A great deal of documentation is required for every project, and I am helping assemble and organize the paperwork.
4. What encourages you to so generously give your time to this cause?
I find iACT’s mission so encouraging especially in today’s social and political climate. IACT fulfills real needs in our community, and I am fortunate to participate in their efforts.
5. What do you enjoy most about volunteering with Hands on Housing/iACT?
The people at iACT are great and make you feel at home right away. I work closely with Deborah Schagen, and she’s been a patient and fun teacher. You know right away you’re working with a group committed to their clients and to making Austin a better place.
6. What would you say to others to encourage them to get more involved with Hands on Housing/iACT?
Do it! Everyone at iACT is so appreciative of volunteers, and there are so many opportunities here to fit different skills and talents.
