We would like to thank everyone who came out for the first workshop sponsored by the Austin Refugee Roundtable. Representatives from several faith and nonprofit communities learned about basics of working with refugees in a workshop led by Laurie Cook-Heffron. A special Thank You to Caritas of Austin for hosting the meeting.
The second training in 2011 will center on services for refugees and on cultural issues related to the refugee communities resettling in Austin today. Please save the date and more information will follow.
Based on the input of those attending, we would like to invite everyone to the next Austin Refugee Roundtable Training:

Refugee Roundtable members, who are able, are invited to attend iACT’s Square One Lunch Program for refugees. The educational program is for refugees in iACT’s English classes and the purpose is to ease their transition into life in the United States. It is followed by a simple lunch prepared by volunteers. The discussion on this particular day will center on the difficulties newly arrived refugees have in starting life in the US. This is an opportunity to hear first hand from and communicate with newly arrived refugees. We are looking for volunteer groups to provide and prepare Square One lunches – this is an easy and fun way to make a difference in the lives of our refugee clients. Please talk to Lu Zeidan at (512) 386-9145 or e-mail if you are interested in either attending or volunteering.
