At iACT, we have great appreciation for the wonderful staff who make our service work possible! In this Staff Spotlight Julianne Luhtala tells us a little more about herself.

Q: Where are you from?
I’m from Madison, WI originally. Since growing up in Wisconsin, I’ve had the pleasure of studying and living in many different places– upstate New York, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Panama City, and Savannah, Georgia, among others.
Q: How long have you been in Austin?
I moved to Austin only two weeks ago! I’m happy to trade in the Midwestern winters I’m used to for sunny Texas. Last weekend I enjoyed exploring the downtown area and Lady Bird Lake. I’m excited to visit the Blanton Museum of Art and the Bullock Museum soon.
Q: What do you do at iACT?
I work with iACT’s Refugee Program as a Refugee Health & Wellness Program Specialist and Instructor. I’ll be teaching health education classes in Spanish, as well as working on outreach in Austin’s Spanish-speaking refugee community. I’m looking forward to supporting our current and incoming clients.
Q: What is the most challenging thing about the work you do at iACT?
My role is new to iACT, so I’m excited for the creativity and flexibility that my position requires as we move forward with program development. So far, the most challenging aspect has been trying to learn as much as I can about our organization’s processes and client registration, so I can effectively deliver H&W course material as soon as possible.
Q: What is the most rewarding thing about the work you do at iACT?
Definitely the most rewarding thing for me has been connecting with our incredible clients and staff. Everyone here has been so welcoming, and iACT’s inclusivity really creates a positive and uplifting atmosphere for everyone who walks through our doors. I’m very grateful to collaborate with our team.
Q: Why would you encourage others to support the work of iACT?
While I’ve only been here a short while, it’s clear that iACT is a special place and community. iACT’s programs make meaningful contributions to people’s lives. I’m inspired by the way individuals can start a class as strangers, but by the time they leave they’re smiling together.
